Corona Virus: Status Update of Sudurpaschim Province

According to the District Representative of Dadeldhura Bhupendra Bista, Amargadhi Municipality has provided essential support to the very poor families and daily wage earners who are affected by lock down the most. Chairperson of ward number 4 Dipendra Thapa has informed that 30 families are given the necessary food supplies. The municipality has also started to spray disinfectant in public places to prevent COVID-19 spread.

According to the District Representative of Darchula Narendra Karki, although government has extended lockdown to control and prevent coronavirus outbreak, 6 people have crossed the Mahakali River from Dharchula, a district of Uttar Pradesh India, on April 7 to enter Nepal. After they reached the Nepalese territory, Jauljibi Police Post kept them in Mahendra Namuna School quarantine shelter.

Six local governments of the district have established “Corona Virus Emergency Fund.” The fund is being used to provide promotional allowances to health workers and essential food supplies to the people in need for survival.

According to the District Representative of Kanchanpur, Koman Niranjan Bhat, Belnandi Rural Municipality has distributed relief packages including rice, lentils, salt, oil and soaps to 300 different households of very poor families.

Kanchanpur district has a data of more than 5000 foreign returnees, and among them, only 210 are kept in quarantine. In the district, 426 beds quarantine shelter and 19 beds isolation ward have been established.

According to the District Representative of Kailali, Mainamoti Chaudhary, well-trained team from Kathamandu has started COVID-19 rapid test since April 7. The team has done blood and throat swab test of 91 people who are kept in Teghari Barrack, Kailali and ICH building, Kanchanpur. Since infected cases have been increased in Sudurpaschim Province, a rapid test of the suspected cases is implemented.

According to the District Representative of Doti, Basudev Joshi, a total of 424 people are kept in different local level quarantine shelters. For the safety and effective service of the health workers, Member of Federal Parliament Prem Ale has provided over 200 sanitizers, 50 sets of PPE, 1,000 pair of shoe cover, 1,000 caps, 1,200 gloves and 1,000 masks to District Hospital of Doti.

According to the District Representative of Bajhang, Ramesh KC, despite the ongoing lockdown, religious and cultural carnivals are being celebrated in the district. Against the lockdown rules, hundreds of people had gathered for Chaitali Mela in Chhabispathibhara Rural municipality. Rural Municipality Deputy-Chairperson Radhika Joshi has said that local community people ignored the rules and request of local government, and fully participated in carnivals.

According to the District Representative of Achham, Shivaraj Dhungana, Ministry of Health and Population mobilized team has reached Achham for COVID-19 rapid test. On April 7, blood and throat swab samples of 168 people were tested which included people staying in Mangalsen and Bayalpata Hospital quarantine, foreign returnees’ families staying in-home quarantine, and frontline health workers.

According to the District Representative of Bajura, Padam Bahadur Singh, 219-bed capacity quarantine shelter has been established in the district. In total, 117 people are kept in 9 different quarantine wards. Although quarantines are established in the district, standard guidelines are not being followed, as informed by Assistant Chief District Officer and Quarantine Mobilization and Management Committee Coordinator Samir Bhandari.

After the lockdown, 15 Haliya Families (daily wage earners) staying in Budhinanda Municipality are running out of food. Local Rangi Luhar has said that they haven’t had adequate food to eat since the lockdown started. Mayor Padan Giri has said that the municipality is going to provide required supplies for survival to the daily wage earners and marginalized community people. Municipality has also established 5 million NPR “Corona Virus Emergency Fund.”
