Escaped Inmates from Central Jail Under Police Custody

During the protest on September 9, 2025, five inmates who had escaped from the Central Jail were arrested by Rupandehi Police on September 18, 2025. According to the Rupandehi District Police Office, after protesters vandalized and set fire to the jails, the escaped inmates were arrested by the Rupandehi District Police Office and its subordinate police units.

As per DSP Suraj Karki, Rupandehi District Police Office, those arrested include Barsati Barai, 59, of Lumbini Sanskritik Municipality-4, Rupandehi, accused in killing case, Baburam Pasi, 24 of Kotahimai Rural Municipality-3, Rupandehi, accused in rape case, Marlesh Beslenhorst, 33, a South Asian national, accused in narcotics case as well as Sitaram Yadav and Buddi Bahadur Shahi. He stated that all those arrested have been handed over to the concerned authorities for further investigation and legal procedures.

Since inmates who escaped during the movement could flee to India via the Nepal-India border, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force are maintaining strict surveillance at the border. DSP Karki stated that surveillance has been increased not only at major checkpoints but also at smaller potential crossing points, and have requested assistance regarding the same with the Indian authorities.

Earlier, police had also arrested nine other inmates who had escaped from various jails across the country and returned them to the respective jails.
