Vandalism at Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality

Local youths vandalized properties in Vote Koshi Rural Municipality on 18 September. Suntali Shrestha, a resident, reported that a group of youths, who had staged a sit-in at the Upper Bhotekoshi Hydropower Plant in Jhirmu, Ward No. 4 of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality demanding a 10% share, vandalized the rural municipality office with stones. They did this after being excluded from the negotiations between the municipality and the project.

On 18 September, while local representatives, including Rural Municipality Chairperson Pasang Nurpu Sherpa, were holding discussions with the hydropower plant representatives to address the demands of the locals, the youths carried out the vandalism at the municipality office.

The youths had been staging a sit-in for three days in front of the 45-megawatt Upper Bhotekoshi Hydropower Plant, demanding the shares promised to the local community. During the protest, a clash broke out between the protesters and local representatives, leaving two people with minor injuries as per Rural Municipality Chairperson Pasang Nurpu Sherpa.
