INSEC and Human Rights Commission Monitored Offices After Arson and Vandalism in Dhanusha During the Gen-Z Protest

INSEC (Informal Sector Service Center) and the Madhesh Province Office of the National Human Rights Commission on 12 September jointly monitored the arson and vandalism incidents that occurred during the Gen-Z protest. The team visited the Customs Office in Janakpur, the Armed Police Post at the Railway Station, Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City Office, District Administration Office of Dhanusha, Janakpur Tax Office, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, and the Madhesh Provincial Assembly to monitor the incidents and the resulting damages.

Man Bahadur Paudel, Head of the Customs Office in Janakpur, stated that on 9 September at around 3 PM, protesters entered the office, set it on fire, vandalized it, and looted office property. He reported that all materials in the office were destroyed by fire, including three trucks, three new cars, twenty four-wheeled vehicles, 300 motorcycles, 12 computer sets, and 20 auto-rickshaws.

The Armed Police Post next to the Customs Office was also set on fire by protesters. According to Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Sujit Kumar Yadav, seven security personnel were present under the command of Police Assistant Inspector Jitendra Narayan Mandal when the protesters suddenly began arson and vandalism at the office. He reported that in addition to setting fire to the office, the protesters also set fire to two jeeps and four motorcycles present at the post.

Similarly, the protesters also vandalized the District Administration Office in Dhanusha. According to Anil Kumar Mandal, the storekeeper at the office, the National Identity Card and Passport branches were set on fire and vandalized. He reported that due to the vandalism and arson, computers, window panes, and various documents in the office were damaged.

Shravan Rajbanshi, a driver at the Tax Office in Janakpur, stated that on 9 September at around 6 PM, protesters began arson and vandalism at the office. He reported that the protesters set fire to a pickup van (registration number Ja 1 Jha 376), a Scorpio (registration number Ja 1 Jha 405), five motorcycles, and also burned the Revenue Collection Branch and the File Storage Branch of the Tax Office.

Likewise, on 9 September at around 2 PM, protesters vandalized the Madhesh Provincial Assembly building, damaging all properties inside the assembly. Protesters also set fire to and vandalized the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives located at Murali Chowk, Janakpur. According to the ministry’s security guard Ramekwal Bhandari, on 9 September at around 1 PM, hundreds of protesters broke the gate lock and set fire to three four-wheeled vehicles and seven motorcycles at the ministry.

Similarly, protesters set fire to the Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City Office. Two fire brigades, one ambulance, two trucks, and one van were set ablaze. Mansur Raina, Legal Advisor of the Judicial Committee of Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City, stated that when the protesters set fire to the office, about 200 gas cylinders stored inside exploded, causing extensive damage to the building and destroying all materials inside the office.
