Death of Inmates in Jhumka Jail While Undergoing Treatment

Inmate Sagar Rai, 24, of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, and Ramdev Urav, 48, of Gadhi Rural Municipality-6, who was in custody awaiting trial, died while undergoing treatment at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Ghopa, Dharan, on 2 September. DSP Yogaraj Khatri of the District Police Office confirmed that both were from Jhumka Jail in Ramdhuni Municipality-5.

According to DSP Khatri, Ramdev Urav was serving sentence in a killing case, while Sagar Rai was in custody awaiting trial in a drug-related case. Sagar Rai was admitted to the hospital on 20 August after suffering from vomiting and stiffness in his body. Likewise, Urav with respiratory problems was admitted to the hospital on 2 September. DSP Khatri confirmed that Urav and Sagar Rai both died the same day on 2 September while undergoing treatment.

DSP Yogaraj Khatri of the District Police Office stated that the bodies of both deceased were handed over to their families on 2 September. A team from the Sunsari District Security Committee monitored the jail the same day and directed the administration to immediately operate a health camp in the jail. Chief District Officer Dhamendra Mishra said the committee has planned to record the health status of prisoners in both blocks and transfer those with serious health conditions. Currently, Jhumka Jail houses a total of 1,794 male inmates and detainees across its two blocks.
