The Federation of Nepalese Journalists, Ramechhap has condemned the beating and mistreatment upon Summar Bahadur Hayu (Prashant), 26, a Bagmati Province Council member of the Federation from Ramechhap, by Rishi Karki, 42, a teacher at Manthali Secondary School. According to the federation, on the evening of July 5, 2025, Karki, under the influence of alcohol, physically attacked and abused Hayu while he was working at the radio station. Nawaraj Shrestha, Secretary of the Federation, Ramechhap, issued a press release on July 8, 2025, condemning the incident. According to the statement, Hayu was attacked over a Facebook status that did not mention any individual or character by name. The statement also expressed concern, calling the incident a direct attack on press freedom and the safety of journalists.
The federation stated that it is unfortunate for such an incident to have been carried out by someone in a respected profession like teaching. It further remarked that incidents like this undermine the dignity of the education sector and spread a negative message in society. The federation has called on the concerned authorities to take legal action against the accused and has also demanded necessary security arrangements to prevent such incidents from recurring.
