RPP-Nepal Chair Thapa Arrested for Violating Prohibitory Order, Released

Police arrested RPP-Nepal Chair Kamal Thapa along with five others on June 1 after they attempted to enter Baluwatar by breaking into the restricted area on the fourth day of the pro-monarchy protest, according to SP Apilraj Bohora of the District Police Office. The others arrested, including Shila Rana, Rakesh Basnet, Ram Chandra Lamichhane, Binod Kapali, and Saroj Timilsina, were taken into custody and held at the District Police Office in Bhadrakali. They were released later that night, according to the District Police Office, Kathmandu.

Police also arrested MP Dipak Singh representing RPP Nepal from the Bhadrakali area. According to SP Apilraj Bohora, Singh had arrived at the District Police Office in Bhadrakali to meet RPP Nepal Chairperson Kamal Thapa. He was taken into custody for a short period after alleged misbehavior and was later released.

Police reported that during the pro-monarchy protest progressing from Narayanchaur to Baluwatar, the protesters became increasingly aggressive and attempted to force their way into the restricted area. The government had earlier declared the Baluwatar area, which includes the Prime Minister’s official residence, the Speaker’s residence, and other key government offices, a prohibited area to ensure security and maintain order.
