Groom and Four Others Sentenced to Imprisonment for Dowry-Related Incident

The District Court of Parsa on April 22 sentenced the groom and four others to six months in prison in connection with a dowry-related incident. The groom, Umesh Shah, 28, fled his wedding venue over not receiving a gold necklace as dowry. The bench of Judge Mohan Subedi, on April 22, along with the sentence ordered each of the five accused to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 and return the Rs 60,000 taken as dowry.

On the night of March 11, 2024, the Ward Police Office, Shripur, arrested five individuals, including the groom Umesh Shah, 28, of Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City-4, Bara, his father Bachhalal Shah Godh, 60, his brothers Rakesh Shah, 42, and Mukesh Shah, 40, and his brother-in-law Anand Shah of Parwanipur Municipality-5, following a dispute over dowry in Ramgadhwa, Birgunj Metropolitan City-24. The groom and his relatives attempted to break off the wedding, claiming they had not been given a gold necklace as dowry.  The Parsa District Court on April 2 had extended their pre-trial detention for two more days for further investigation.
