Babita Kumari Mahara, 21, from Haripur Municipality-2, filed a complaint at the District Police Office in Malangwa on April 4, accusing her family members of beating her over dowry issue. The victim alleges that on March 24, her mother-in-law, Mohani Devi Mahara, 47, her 15-year-old sister-in-law, and husband, Ramkalesh Mahara, 22 verbally and physically abused her over the demand for additional dowry.
The victim received treatment at the Haripur Health Post on March 24, and further treatment was provided at the District Hospital in Malangwa from March 25 to 27, according to Jairam Mahara Chamar, the victim’s father. The victim has been staying at her parents’ home in Malangwa Municipality-4, Shibasagar Chowk, after receiving treatment.
The victim and the accused, Ramkalesh Mahara, got married on February 28, 2024. Although a cash amount of Rs 50,000 and furnitures were given to Mahara family as dowry, the victim’s family alleges that the accused abused the victim for not providing one tola of gold (approximately 11.664 grams) as additional dowry. SP Rabindra Bahadur Shrestha of the District Police Office, Malangwa, stated that an investigation into the incident is underway and the accused will be prosecuted according to the law.
