Cholera Outbreak Increasing in Rajpur Municipality of Rautahat

Dysentery, initially found in one individual in Rajpur Municipality-4 on September 18, 2024, has now spread to Ward No. 3 of the same municipality. Rajpur Municipal Health Coordinator, Khurshid Alam, stated that cholera has affected 71 people in Wards 3 and 4 of Rajpur Municipality. Dr. Murari Thakur of Provincial Hospital Gaur confirmed that cholera was identified after conducting tests and cultures on a sample from one infected person.

So far, 71 people have been diagnosed with cholera, including eight girls and ten boys under the age of five, four girls and ten boys aged 6 to 10 years, eight females and nine males aged 11 to 20 years, and seven males and 15 females aged 21 to 23 years. Among them, 18 individuals are being treated at the Rajpur Health Center, according to Mijanu Rahaman, the In-charge of the Primary Health Center in Rajpur Municipality-4.

A team of doctors from the District Administration Office, District Police Office, and Provincial Hospital Gaur conducted on-site monitoring on September 22 at the request of Municipal Health Coordinator Khursed Alam and In-charge of the Primary Health Center Mijanu Rahaman. This monitoring aimed to prevent the rapid spread of the cholera outbreak to other wards. District Administration Office Chief Hiralal Regmi announced that Rajpur Municipalities 3 and 4 have been declared prohibited areas from September 22 until further notice, or until the disease is under control.

Mansarudil Dewan, a teacher, said that a team including Medical Superintendent Dr. Murari Thakur of Provincial Hospital Gaur, Emergency In-charge Dr. Rajesh Kumar Singh reached the cholera-affected areas with necessary medicines. Wasim Akhtar Khan, an employee at the health center, stated that cholera has been controlled to some extent, and movement of people has been restricted to prevent further spread. By 1 PM on September 23, 53 of 71 diagnosed individuals had been discharged, while nine new cholera cases were reported.

The Chief of the District Public Health Office, Mahesh Shah, informed INSEC Rautahat representative Gauri Neupane via telephone that necessary medicines have been provided to the cholera-affected areas. He assured that if there is a shortage, additional medication will be dispatched promptly to help control the disease.
