Public school accountants and office assistants of Jumla are on a sit-in, from June 4, 2023, at the premises of the Education Development and Coordination Unit Jumla.
Ram Bahadur Shahi, Chairperson of Nepal School Staff Council Jumla, said they will sit in from 10 am to 5 pm, every day from June 4 to June 9 on Friday. Shantinath Yogi, the General Secretary of the school staff council, said that they were forced to take this step after the government ignored their demands.
Their demands include paying school staff accountants the same as accountants, providing equal salary and facilities to office assistants without considering their rank, implementing the decision made by the ministerial meeting on September 4, 2022, issuing the Federal Education Act should be, and establish a quota for the school staff allowing a permanent position. Despite the government providing assurance of the new fiscal policy will address their demands, no funds were allocated to address the issue, in the budget presented by the finance minister.
The council announced the protest saying that the government has not provided the minimum wage as stipulated by the Labor Act. More than 70 accountants and office assistants from various schools in the district are on strike.
