In protest against the demolition of houses and shops for road expansion in the Mirchaiya Municipality Building on April 20, 2023, the squatters and street vendors pelted stones and vandalized the Municipality Office building.
Squatters and vendors, who were living and operating a business in Mirchaiya market for almost seven decades, started a protest after the municipality demolished their houses for road expansion.
The protestors started to vandalize the building when Mayor Shravan Yadav refused to address the crows that had gathered at the Municipality office.
Harikrishna KC, DSP of Mirchaiya District Police Office, said that the windows and doors of the municipal building and the municipal vehicle No. 1 Jh 521 were damaged. The police fired 11 shells of tear gas, air fire, shotguns, and rubber bullets to disperse the protestors to control the crowd.
Police Assistant Habaldar Dhirendra Prasad Yadav was injured during the commotion. DSP KC said he suffered a head injury after being hit by the stone pelted by the protestors and was treated at a local hospital.
Residents have been protesting continuously for a week, alleging that the houses they have been living in were vandalized by the city, and the mayor is operating arbitrarily.
