Rise in Sexual Violence Cases in Sankhuwasabha

Incidents of sexual violence against women and children have increased in the district over the past four years, according to data released by the District Police Office.

According to police statistics, a total of 101 cases of violence against women were registered during the four-year period. The data show that cases of rape and sexual abuse have increased by 118 percent.

District Police Office DSP Kumar Prasad Mainali said that police records from fiscal years 2022/23 to 2025/26 indicate that more than 100 women and children became victims of violence during the period.

DSP Mainali stated that while 16 cases were registered in the previous fiscal year, the number increased to 35 in fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26), marking an increase of 19 cases within a year. He said this represents a 118 percent rise in such crimes.

Police also reported that of the 148 cases registered, 144 have been resolved, achieving a disposal rate of 97 percent.

According to the District Police Office, despite awareness programmes on violence against women and children, sexual offences, and domestic violence, the number of such incidents continues to rise.

The police stated that they have been conducting awareness programmes in coordination with schools, local governments, communities, and other stakeholders to help reduce violence against women and children.
