The government’s negotiation team entered into a Five points agreement with the struggle committee against meter interest Nepal on 1 April 2023 at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The government assured to present the proposal to form an Inquiry Commission to address the demands of the meter interest victims to the Council of Ministers. The meter interest victims who had arrived in Kathmandu after walking for 11 days from Bardibas in Mahottari agreed to withdraw their protest sit-in.
In the memorandum of agreement, it is mentioned that as per the recommendation of the Meter Interest Criminal Arrest Committee, on 12 September 2022, necessary coordination and facilitation will be done with the associated agencies for the speedy and effective implementation of the report of the working group.
Similarly, to address the regular complaints or grievances of meter interest victims, the negotiation team will recommend the government to form a district-level coordination and facilitation committee will be with the coordination of the Chief District officer, and the District-based Nepal Police, Public Prosecutor, Head of Land Surveyor Office, representatives of banks and financial institutions and representatives of meter badge victims.
In the letter of agreement, it is mentioned that the team will also recommend the government to include unfair transactions regarding meter interest loans as an offense under the law.
