The locals of Bangadkupinde Municipality-12 Nigalchula, Majkhark and Chaur have water supply problems even during monsoon season.
Kamal BK, a local, said that due to the problem of drinking water in the settlement which is about 2000 meters above sea level, the locals were forced to walk for 1 hour to get drinking water.
He informed that the locals have been suffering from scarcity of drinking water problem for 13 years after the motor of solar energy water supply scheme built in 2006 broke down. He said one has to get up early in the morning and carry water vessels and go to the Markedhara spring an hour below. Due to water shortage, 110 families including 53 in Majkhark and 57 in Chaur have been affected.
In 2009, the Sabik Rural Development Committee conducted a solar water supply scheme by spending NPR 300,000. Junmaya Gharti, 45, said if there is a lot of rainfall then water would come to that spring however, due to drought it is mostly dry.
Sunita Rokka, 40, of Majhakharka is suffering from a problem of water supply and she cannot drink water all day unless she gets up early and goes to the spring.
Dil Bahadur Sunar, in-charge of the health post in Nigalchula, said that due to the water problem, it is difficult to provide services at the maternity home due to lack of drinking water. Lal Bahadur Gharti, Ward Chairperson of Bangadkupinde Municipality-12, says that there is no alternative to eradicating the drinking water to solve the drinking water problem.
According to him, a budget of NPR 1.9 million rupees was allocated from 2012 to 2018 to repair the motor of the scheme run in Chaur. He said the problem of frequent breakdowns of motors has caused water supply problems in the village. With the limited budget that comes to us, it is not possible to lift the problem of drinking water, the provincial and federal governments have repeatedly requested for budget, but they are ignoring it. Further he says that 70 families have migrated from two settlements in a period of 5 years due to the problem of drinking water.
