Janakpur High Court Begins Live Broadcasting of Hearings

The Janakpur High Court has begun live-streaming court hearings via YouTube from June 22, with the objective of further ensuring transparency in judicial proceedings and strengthening citizens’ right to information.

Chief Judge Tek Narayan Kunwar stated that this initiative has been introduced to make the justice system more transparent, accountable, and citizen-friendly through the maximum use of available technology. He informed that, except for cases conducted in closed sessions, hearings and arguments in all other cases will now be broadcast live. On the first day, hearings of three cases were streamed live through the court’s official YouTube channel.

He further stated that the court had already implemented a system allowing legal arguments to be conducted online. In addition, LED screens, cameras, and other necessary equipment have been installed in each courtroom to facilitate the use of video conferencing technology, enabling lawyers to argue cases from anywhere in Nepal or around the world.

It is expected that these live broadcasts will make a significant contribution to enhancing transparency and accountability in judicial proceedings, as well as protecting the right to information. He expressed confidence that this step will strengthen the practice of an open justice system and help expand citizens’ access to justice.
