Youth Rights Defenders Submit Declaration to NHRC Chairperson

A group of young human rights defenders held discussions at the office of the National Human Rights Commission and submitted a 17-point declaration passed during the First Youth Human Rights Defenders Conference held on May 1 and 2, 2026, to Commission Chairperson Tap Bahadur Thapa Magar.

Chairperson Thapa Magar said the declaration had raised highly sensitive human rights issues and stressed the need to seek government accountability through campaigns at the local level.

He stated that although the Commission had published a monitoring report and recommendations regarding the issues of landless squatters, the expected results had not yet been achieved. He further said that a special committee had been formed within the Commission to ensure implementation of its previous recommendations, and that a monitoring report related to the Gen-Z movement would soon be made public through the Commission.

Secretary Murari Prasad Kharel of the National Human Rights Commission said that the declaration presents a roadmap for a human rights campaign designed to draw the attention of all concerned stakeholders.

He emphasized the need to disseminate the declaration to federal, provincial, and all local governments. He also informed youth human rights defenders that the process of decision-making has been initiated to publish a monitoring report related to the “Nava Yuwa Pusta” movement.

Facilitating the interaction, focal person of the National Youth Human Rights Defenders Network, Barun Basyal, briefed the Commission’s Chairperson and Secretary on the significance of the 17-point declaration and the expectations reflected in its provisions.
