Students and parents of Karnali Secondary School, Chauganfaya in Simkot Rural Municipality–7 took to the streets on Baisakh 28 (May 10) in protest against the reduction of teacher positions and the removal of two classes. The protest began after the Simkot Rural Municipality decided on May 5 to cut one Nepali subject teaching post from the school and transfer it to Kailash Secondary School in the same ward.
Calling the decision discriminatory, students and parents locked the school in protest.
According to Principal Lokraj Shahi, the reduction in teaching positions has created a situation where the teaching-learning process has been adversely affected.
Chairperson of the School Management Committee, Lok Bahadur Shahi, stated that the school will remain closed until the local government’s decision is withdrawn. He further said that parents and students also surrounded the Simkot Rural Municipality office and staged sit-ins and chanting of slogans.
Grade 10 student Samjhana Shahi said that the protest was organized because the reduction of teacher positions and classes has created problems in teaching and learning.
According to local resident Krishn Bahadur Shahi, around 150 students and more than 50 parents from Karnali Secondary School have jointly participated in the ongoing protest. During the demonstration, the keys of the entire school were handed over to the rural municipality.
Local resident Jeevan Bahadur Shahi alleged that cutting teacher positions despite having a sufficient number of students is an attempt to weaken the school. He remarked that instead of reducing posts, it would be more appropriate to shut down the school altogether.
Meanwhile, Simkot Rural Municipality Chairperson Vijay Bhandari said that the decision was made as part of a teacher quota adjustment process. He stated that the long-pending adjustment of secondary-level teaching positions is now being implemented. Locals say the school, which runs classes from early childhood development to Grade 10, is currently facing a shortage of teachers.
Similarly, students and parents have also been protesting the reduction of teacher posts at Ramdev Secondary School in Simkot Rural Municipality–2 and Raling Secondary School in Ward No. 3.
Chairperson Bhandari has committed to holding an executive committee meeting within the next three days to discuss the issue and inform the school stakeholders accordingly.
