Death During Abortion: High-Level Investigation Committee Formed

The Nepal Medical Council has formed a high-level committee to investigate the death of a woman during an abortion procedure in Butwal.

The Council has constituted a five-member committee under the coordination of Samrat Parajuli. The committee includes gynecologist and obstetrician Prof. Dr. Padamraj Pant, Dr. Rajendra Basyal, Dr. Anup Panthi, legal expert Govinda Marasini, and civil society representative Dinesh Pandey. The team has been tasked with conducting a field inspection of the concerned health institutions to determine the facts of the incident.

The Council stated that the investigation will be carried out in coordination with the District Administration Office and Nepal Police. It also mentioned that strict action will be taken in accordance with prevailing laws if anyone is found guilty.

The deceased has been identified as Gita Pandey, 29, of Palpa, who died during an abortion procedure. Police have arrested five individuals, including Dr. DB Khatri, operator of Khatri Nursing Home, and Dr. Satish Rupakheti of Indulekha Clinic, on charges of involvement in the incident.

According to preliminary investigations, her condition became critical during a medication-induced abortion carried out at different health facilities. She was later taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The family has filed a complaint alleging medical negligence.
