For the past four months, waste management has not been carried out in Musikot Municipality, causing the district headquarters, Khalanga Bazaar, to become foul-smelling. Since the month of December 2025, uncollected garbage has piled up in the main intersections and alleys of the market area.
Locals have reported that the accumulation of waste in busy locations such as Pushpalal Chowk, Tribeni Chowk, Shahid Gate, and the Agricultural Development Bank Chowk has made it difficult for residents to even move around.
Previously, waste was being disposed of at Panidhunga in Ward No. 2 of Musikot Municipality. However, after local residents protested against the increasing pollution caused by waste disposal there and stopped further dumping, the problem has arisen.

The piling up of garbage has also affected the aesthetic beauty of the market. “How long do we have to walk around covering our noses? The local government must show initiative in addressing the people’s problems,” said local businessman Khagendra Rasaili.
Although the municipality had signed a 10-year agreement for waste management at Panidhunga, Deputy Mayor Bimal Kumar Pun Magar stated that the situation has become complicated due to unmanaged burning of waste and the changing demands of local residents.
According to Mayor Mahendra KC, efforts are underway to find an alternative site for a long-term solution. “Some have turned waste management into a bargaining issue, but the municipality is continuously working towards a solution,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chief District Officer Dinesh Prasad Thani also expressed confidence that the municipality is actively working on resolving the issue and that waste management will be addressed soon.
According to local business owners, as garbage continues to pile up, the risk of infectous diseases may increase with the onset of the summer season, making it essential for the concerned authorities to take immediate action.
