Due to continuous rainfall since October 4, the district jail in Jaleshwar has been flooded, forcing inmates to face difficulties in finding safe shelter and food. Acting Chief Robin Thakur stated that with 275 inmates in total, the water inside the jail has reached up to four feet, causing problems with living space, food, drinking water, and sanitation. Although all inmates have been moved to the old two-story building of the jail, Thakur said that the shortage of food has left them having to endure hunger.
The Jaleshwar Municipality provided relief support to the jail on October 5, including only 50 cartons of water, 50 kg of puffed rice, and 50 cartons of instant noodles, according to the jail administration. Acting Chief Thakur stated that, since there are elderly and chronically ill inmates in the jail, they have also appealed for additional relief and assistance.
During the Gen-Z protest on September 9, 575 inmates escaped from Jaleshwar Jail. Including those who returned on their own and those re-arrested by police, 275 inmates are currently in custody at the jail.
