One Person Injured by Gun Shot at Banke Jail

On 11 September inmates at Banke Prison in Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City-10 vandalized the office and set fires while attempting to escape. In an effort to bring the situation under control, security personnel opened fire, including aerial shots, injuring one inmate.

The injured is Umesh Bam,44, of Ghodaghodi Municipality-2, Kailali District. He sustained a gunshot to his right leg. He is currently receiving treatment at Bheri Hospital. According to Jailor Prakash Dhungana, around 10 to 15 inmates tried to come out from the block where male inmates are kept, demanding that they be released since prisoners from other jails had been freed. When security personnel attempted to stop them, the inmates set fire using firewood and kerosene from the kitchen.

Jailor Dhungana stated that although Banke Jail has a capacity of 350, it currently houses 770 inmates including 669 men and 1 woman. Banke’s Chief District Officer, Dharam Raj Joshi, informed that the jail is now under the control of security personnel.
