Harish Pali, 28, of Bhogeshwar Rural Municipality-5, Dadeldhura, who was serving his sentence at the District Jail, Kailali, died during treatment at Seti Provincial Hospital in Dhangadhi on the night of June 16. His brother, Jiban Chhetri, has alleged that Harish was beaten to death, claiming that bruises and head injuries were visible on his body. He said that Harish was arrested from home in good health and questioned how he could have died within two days of being taken into custody. He further stated that the incident must be thoroughly investigated and that the family would not claim the body until justice is served.
The deceased’s father, Bhoj Pali, informed INSEC during a meeting that the family is preparing to file a complaint demanding a thorough investigation into the incident, along with justice and compensation. Basanta Bahadur Khatri, the jailer of Kailali District Jail, told INSEC that Pali was found unconscious inside the prison and died during treatment at Seti Provincial Hospital in Dhangadhi on the night of June 16. Jailer Khatri stated that Pali, who had been brought to serve his sentence on June 15 with a court order, refused to eat dinner that night and demanded alcohol. He reportedly hit his head and limbs against the wall, causing him to fall unconscious, and later died during treatment.
DSP Rajkumar Singh of the District Police Office, Kailali stated that no complaint has been filed by the aggrieved party so far, and further investigation will be carried out if a complaint is received. In a financial dispute case, the Kailali District Court had convicted Pali on March 12, 2024, sentencing him to 10 days in prison and a fine of Rs. 200,000. The team from the District Police Office, Kailali, arrested the absconding convict from his home on June 13, 2025, presented him before the District Court, and handed him over to Kailali District Jail on June 15.
Because the victim’s family refused to take the body until the truth they get justice, the post-mortem has not been done for three days. The body is kept at the mortuary of Seti Provincial Hospital in Dhangadhi.
