Seven Arrested in Maitighar Protest Following Fatal Clashes in Balkumari

The police arrested seven individuals who were participating in a protest at Maitighar Mandala on December 30. The demonstration was in response to the incident on December 29, where two people were killed by police firing and baton charge during the protest at Balkumari, Lalitpur.

Those arrested included 34-year-old Hemraj Thapa of Kathmandu, 32-year-old Som Sharma of Baglung, 27-year-old Biplab Khadka of Bajhang, 30-year-old Khemraj Saund of Bajura, 23-year-old Kamal Sanjyal of Jajarkot, 23-year-old Sunil Khadka of Kailali, and 30-year-old Dr. Nicholas Bhushal.

Spokesman SP Kumod Dhungel informed that those who were arrested are kept in the Singhadurbar District Police Complex, Kathmandu. Youths who were unable to participate in the Employment Permit System (EPS) exam required for employment in South Korea set fire to the vehicle of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister Prakash Jwala during a demonstration in Balkumari on December 29.

22-year-old Birendra Shah Thakuri from Chowrapati Rural Municipality-1 in Achham was fatally shot by the police during the protest. Additionally, 23-year-old Sujan Raut, of Bhaktapur, was killed by baton charge by the police during the same protest.
