Reconciliation To Avoid Caste Discrimination Charge: Resulting Collective Ostracism of Dalit Community

After the incident of caste-based discrimination in the Arjelbot area of Ghiring Rural Municipality-3, a collective ostracism has been imposed on 10 Dalit households by the non-Dalit community.

On June 3, in Manpur ward in the house of Bambahadur Thapa, 25-year-old local resident Khim Bahadur Thapa, allegedly discriminated against Shiv Pariyar, a 35-year-old resident of the same area, by asking him “not to touch the meat”.

Following the incident and warning to proceed with legal action against caste-based discrimination, the victim informed that a reconciliation agreement was made between the two parties on  June 3, upon the request of the local individuals.

In the reconciliation agreement, it was agreed that Khim Bahadur, who discriminated the victim, Shiv Pariyar, on the basis of caste, should apologize to the victim and the victim would also forgive him.

Pariyar also informed that after the incident there has been an announcement that no one will discriminate against caste in any public places or any other place within Arjellbot and it has been agreed that a legal action shall be taken if anyone engages in caste-based discrimination.

The local journalist and press advisor of Ghiring Rural Municipality, Anjan Pariyar, provided information that there is an agreement among the locals not to engage in caste-based discrimination in any place within the village, during social gatherings or any other places.

The aforementioned reconciliation agreement was signed by journalist Anjan Pariyar, Man Bahadur Pariyar, and Dhan Bahadur Pariyar from the victim’s side, and Yam Bahadur Thapa, Prem Bahadur Thapa, and Jas Bahadur Gurung of the Ghiring Village Working Committee of the Nepali Congress from the opposition side. Additionally, 45 villagers have also signed the agreement in collective support.

Journalist Pariyar provided information about the collective ostracism faced by the Dalit community following the reconciliation agreement.

After the Dalit community offered forgiveness and reconciliation in cases of caste-based discrimination, the local non-Dalit community is accused of initiating social boycott against the Dalit community in return. The Dalit community, extended their forgiveness to the non-Dalit individual in a spirit of brotherhood for engaging in caste-based discrimination, is now expressing that they are facing social exclusion after the reconciliation.
