Cadres of Samyukta Sangharsha Committee, province-1 had a clash with Nepal police during a protest against renaming Koshi province at Biratnagar on May 28.
30 police officers and 20 protestors were injured during the incident. The police fired 30 rounds of open fire and 74 tear gases to control the situation.
Deepak Pokharel, SP of the District Police Office, stated that 30 police officers were hurt in the conflict in Devkotachowk near the Koshi Provincial Assembly. However, the details of the injured officers have been kept confidential.
Ganesh Mibhak Miklajung, Morang, Narendra Limbu, Kamal, Jhapa, Bhawani Bikram Sharma Shivasatakshi, Jhapa, Ashok Ghimire, Damak, Jhapa, Bikesh Rai, Chulachuli, Illam, Prakash Limbu, Illam, Sami Palungwa, Arjundhara, Jhapa, Chandrakumar Rai, Dharan, Sunsari, Sanjay Rai, Khotang, Kiran Lingden, Jhapa, Chandra Sawa, Arjundhara, Jhapa, Man Kumar Thegim Mainapa Ilam, Yogendra Paksawa Chhathar, Tehrathum, Khadak Yonghang Mahamai, Ilam, Bhimraj Limbu Manlung, Tehrathum, Pradeep Neyong Dharan, Sunsari, Arjun Rai, Sunsari Sanjay Kumar Rai Sunsari and Uparjan Rai, Sunsari were the 20 protestors injured in the conflict. The injured were treated at Koshi Hospital.
After Parshuram Khapung, Province Chief of Koshi province, called the second budget convention of the state assembly, protestors staged a protest in front of the assembly building on May 28. The situation became worse when the police tried to stop the protestors from crossing the prohibited area.
The police also threw water to disperse the crowd. Koshi State was renamed by Koshi State Assembly in a meeting on March 1.
