Gore Nepali Jwalamukhi rural municipality-6, filed a complaint with the district police office on 8th May 2023, demanding an investigation on his brother, 19-year-old Jit Bahadur Nepali’s suicide after failing to pay his school fees.
Gore Nepali says that his brother committed suicide on May 3, 2023, after he was denied an admission card for Rs 2,100 by Salbas Secondary School for students preparing for the examination of the class 12 exam.
Upon not receiving the admission card from the school, Jit Bahadur went home and asked his brother to pay more money to the school. Upon his brother’s refusal to pay more money, an argument sparked between them.
On May, 3, the victim ingested rat poison and was rushed to the Dhading Hospital for his treatment. Later he was transferred to Bharatpur Hospital for further treatment. He passed away during the treatment. His post-mortem was conducted in Bharatpur Hospital itself on May 5.
Although the government has provisions for free education up to the secondary level, schools regularly charge fees. After the demise of Jit Bahadur, Salbas Secondary School conducted a press release on May 8 stating that the school was not to blame for the incident.
In connection with the incident, the principal of the school, Balram Itni, said that Jitbahadur did not commit suicide because the school refused to provide him with an admission card. The students who were unable to pay the fee were asked to visit the school the next day.
Shyam Magarati, the chairperson of the Dalit Seva Sangh, an organization that works for the rights of Dalits, has demanded an investigation into the incident and the prosecution of those responsible.
Following the news that a student died because of his inability to pay the fee. Nepali Congress leader Gopal B.K. has called for a meeting and discussion with the school and the family to demand a fair investigation.
District Police Office DSP Santlal Prasad Jaiswar informed that the police will investigate and take action if found guilty.
