Police and Victim’s Family Attacked while Arresting Accused of Rape

Assistant Police Inspector, Lakshmi Dhungel Rawat of the Area Police Office Palanta and Dhanman BK, a family member of the rape victim, were injured, on May 8, 2023, when the villagers attacked the police who went to arrest the absconding accused of rape, Sank Budha, 31, of Palanta Rural Municipality-6 Sain.

District Police Office Inspector Shuvraj Bam informed the INSEC representative that both the injured are being treated at the local health post and the condition of the injured B.K. is critical. According to him, preparations are being made to rescue both the injured by helicopter. Acting Chief District Officer Saroj Adhikari said the police has sent a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs to send a helicopter to rescue the injured.

The accused of rape absconded with a handgun. Inspector Bam says that more teams have been dispatched from the District Police Office and nearby police stations to search for him.

The family of the victim filed a complaint at the district police office on, October 18, 2022, accusing Budha of rape on July 15, 2022. Police dispatched a team of four police to arrest Budha after receiving information that the absconding Budha had come to the house. Dhungle had tagged along with the police. The villagers attacked the police team and Dhungel after the police handcuffed Budha to transport.
