The number of independent candidates is more than that of political party candidates in the upcoming by-election to be held on 23 April 2023.
According to the information provided by the Election Commission on its website, there are 33 party candidates and 36 independent candidates.
Statistics show that political parties are not interested in registering women candidates.

RPP has nominated one woman in Tanahun while seven women have registered themselves as independent candidates in other areas. However, there was no independent candidacy in Tanahun. There are 24 independent candidates in Bara-2 and 12 in Chitwan-2.
Re-election is about to be held in Tanahu-1 after the appointment of Ram Chandra Paudel, who was elected from Tanahu-1, as the President. Similarly, re-election is about to be held in Bara-2 after Ramsahaya Prasad Yadav, who was elected from Bara-2, was elected as the vice president.
Ravi Lamichhane, who was elected from Chitwan-2, was found guilty in a case related to citizenship. His post as a member of Parliament was revoked. Thus, a re-election is going to be held in Chitwan-2.
Ramesh Prasad Kharel, Nepal Sushashan Party’s candidate from Kathmandu Constituency No. 1 received 3,124 votes in the election held on 20 November 2022. Kharel, who could not be elected in that attempt, has registered his candidacy from Bara-2 on behalf of National Independent Party in the by-election.
Similarly, Sarbendra Khanal, a UML candidate in Kathmandu constituency No. 6, received 8,917 votes in the election held on 20 November.
Khanal, who was defeated in that election, has registered his candidacy for Tanahun-2 from the same party in the by-election.
People’s Socialist Party President Upendra Yadav was defeated from Saptari-2 in the elections held on 20 November. He had received 16,979 votes. He has registered his candidacy from Bara-2 for the by-election to be held on 23 April 2023.
Shivchandra Prasad Kuswah, a Maoist candidate in the election on held on 20 November from Constituency No. 2 of Bara District, was defeated in the election. He received 13,468 votes. He has now registered his candidacy from Janamat Party in the upcoming by-election.
Member of Parliament, Ravi Lamichhane, who was also the Minister of Home Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister was revoked from his positions based on the Supreme Court’s order on 27 January 2023. His positions were revoked for not regaining Nepali Citizenship after renouncing American citizenship.
After the revocation of the position, Lammichhane, Chairperson of National Independent Party has registered his candidacy again in the scheduled by-election.
