Discussion on Human Rights Defender’s Situation held

A discussion program was held in Nepalgunj on February 28 regarding the situation of Human Rights Defenders.

The discussion was held among INSEC, NHRC, European Union working group, COCAP, Blue Diamond Society, French embassy with Human rights defenders.

During the discussion, regional director Murari Prasad Kharel of NHRC Nepalgunj said that human rights defnders must have common understanding regarding their rights, responsibilities and process.

He added that the challenges among the HRDs are increasing due to the government body being unaccountable.

Speaking at the program, INSEC coordinator Bhola Mahat of Nepalgunj recommended the European Union to bring program on building capacity among HRDs. He added that there are extra challenges among the defenders due to the involvement of HRDs from political parties.

Human Rights alliance vice chair Suresh Gautam accused government of taking the issue lightly, raised by the NGOs. Chairperson Bal Bahadur Chand of Nepalgunj Bar Association said that the verdict given by the court is not implemented by the government bodies adding extra challenges on HRDs.

Activists Prabhat Thakuri said that the implementation part of the government is very weak.  Mohan Acharya of DANIDA said that conflict victims are still waiting for justice due to the lack of commitment by the political parties and lack of act.

Basanta Gautam of consumer’s rights protection Forum said that HRDs are facing challenges due to the vetting. Bishwojit Tiwari of IHRC said that the victim’s party became weak because of not implementing “PLI” cases. Ayush Chaudhary of conflict victim family said that the victims do not have any faith on getting justice.

Media personnel Govinda Sharma said that journos are facing allegation of blackmailing if the news are published in their favour.
