Interaction Program on Women’s Access and Challenges in Constitutional and Legal Rights

Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) and Shantimalika jointly organized an interaction on women’s access and challenges to constitutional and legal rights in Kathmandu on March 12.

Speaking on the program, INSEC Chairperson Dr. Indira Shrestha said that a campaign should be launched to end violence against women from home to home.

She said, “There is an increase in the number of incidents becoming public. However, the environment has not been conducive for the victims of all the incidents to reach the police and the media. ‘

Joint Secretary of the Protection Division of the National Human Rights Commission, Deepak Jung Karki, said that laws should not only be made but also should be implemented.

Speaking on the program, advocate Meera Dhungana said that women still do not have the right to identity.

Stella Tamang, an advisor to Shantimalika, said that the end of the patriarchal structure was needed now. “Only then will women’s rights be ensured,” he said.

INSEC Executive Director Bijay Raj Gautam pointed out the need for wide-ranging discussions among stakeholders to reduce the incidence of violence against women and girls.

Advisor of Shantimalika Tulsalata Amatya said that rights without identity are not acceptable.

Saloni Singh, an advisor to the same organization, said that other problems would be solved on the day when women were accepted as human beings.

Adviser of Shantimalika Sharmila Karki said that it was necessary to move ahead by correcting the shortcomings in the implementation of the provisions in the law.
