The jail in Gulariya, Bardiya District, is holding more than double its capacity of inmates.
Although the prison has a capacity of 150 inmates, including 125 men and 25 women, it is currently housing 406 prisoners.
According to Jailor Dipendra Bahadur Shahi, there are 368 male inmates in total, including 271 convicts and 97 detainees. Similarly, there are 69 female inmates, including 38 convicts and 31 detainees. In addition, there are three dependent children inside the jail.
Jailor Shahi stated that overcrowding has led to a shortage of toilets and sanitation problems within the jail. He also noted that limited resources are making daily management difficult.
