Prison administration officials have said that 428 inmates remain absconding out of the 1,796 inmates who escaped from the Regional Prison Office, Jhumka, during the protest staged by the “Nava Yuwa Pusta” movement.
According to Jailor Subas Lamichhane, 428 inmates are still at large among those who fled from the Regional Prison Office in Ramdhuni Municipality–5 on September 10, 2025, during the protest.
Lamichhane stated that 936 inmates later came into contact voluntarily, while 432 others were arrested from different places at different times. Altogether, 1,368 inmates have been brought back to jail.
DSP Chandra Bahadur Khadka of the District Police Office said that most of the escaped inmates had fled towards India, and efforts are underway to bring them back to Nepal with the assistance of Indian police.
During the protest on September 10, 2025, demonstrators reportedly surrounded the jail office and created chaos, leading to the escape of the inmates.
