A clash broke out among inmates at the Kanchanpur District Jail on April 8, 2026, located in Bhimdutta Municipality-18, Bhagatpur, leaving five inmates injured.
The injured inmates have been identified as Om Prakash Gharedi, 23, from Shukaphanta Municipality-7, Bhuwan Nath from Ward No. 11 of the same municipality, Bhuwan Air from the same area, Ayush Bam, 25, from Bhimdutta Municipality-7, and Raju Damai, 26, from Belauri Municipality-8.
According to Superintendent of Police Khadak Bahadur Khatri of the District Police Office, Kanchanpur, the five injured inmates were sent to Mahakali Provincial Hospital for treatment, and a police team was mobilized to bring the situation under control following the clash between two groups of inmates.
Chief District Officer Madan Koirala stated that issues such as housing inmates at double the jail’s capacity, keeping those accused of drug-related offenses together with other inmates, and similar challenges have led to recurring clashes among inmates. He added that preparations are underway to transfer inmates involved in such disputes to other jails to maintain security within the facility.
Hemant Saud, Chief of Kanchanpur District Prison, stated that the clash occurred following a dispute between two groups of inmates. Although the exact cause of the incident has not been determined, he noted that misunderstandings between inmates facing drug-related charges and those involved in other cases may have triggered the conflict.
In recent months, incidents of clashes within the jail have been occurring repeatedly. On December 19, eight inmates were injured while demanding services and facilities from the state, and on March 22, two inmates were injured in another clash. At that time, 13 inmates involved in the beating were transferred to other facilities.
Inmates have also revealed that illegal activities, including drug-related activities, have been taking place inside the jail. Following the continuous clashes among inmates at Kanchanpur District Jail, an investigation committee was formed under the coordination of Assistant Chief District Officer Mohan Chandra Joshi. However, the committee has not yet made its report public.
