Ambika Karki, 47, a domestic violence survivor of Ekata Tole, Ward No. 8, Sundarharaicha Municipality, has received financial support from INSEC to assist in legal proceedings.
The INSEC Koshi Province Office, Biratnagar, provided financial assistance of Rs. 7,500 on May 8, along with support in filing a case at the District Court.
According to INSEC Koshi Province Coordinator Manohar Kumar Pokharel, a complaint filed at the District Court on behalf of Karki, who is also the guardian of her 11-year-old minor son, against her husband Purna Bahadur Neupane, was officially registered on May 8.
After the victim submitted an application at the INSEC Koshi Province Office along with a recommendation from the ward office, INSEC provided free legal assistance in her case and took necessary steps to support legal remedy, coordinator Pokharel said.
Karki stated that she married Purna Bahadur Neupane on February 27, 2002, according to social traditions. She added that after her husband went abroad for foreign employment, he neglected the education, health, and medical needs of herself and her children, leading her to file a property partition case at the court with INSEC’s support.
She reached the INSEC Koshi Province Office after learning from members of the Human Rights Defenders Network formed by INSEC that INSEC works to ensure access to justice for women survivors of domestic violence, through journalist Baburam Bhattarai.
The victim said she was compelled to approach INSEC after discussions held on 10 Baisakh 2083 between family members and local community leaders, where her husband reportedly refused to provide for the children and wife or give any share in property.
Following the filing of the case related to property partition and domestic violence at the District Court, the victim has expressed hope for justice.
