Cleanliness and Pollution Awareness Program

The Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC), Koshi Province Office, marked World Environment Day 2026 by organizing a cleanliness and pollution awareness program on June 5, 2026 at Devanagunj Rural Municipality of Sunsari.

The program was conducted through cleaning activities at streets, markets, temples, and schools in Captain Ganj of Ward No. 3 in Devanagunj Rural Municipality.

According to Jahangir Alam, member of the INSEC-formed Koshi Province-level Human Rights Defenders Network and a teacher at Kalika Public School, the cleanliness and awareness program was carried out with the participation of the network, teachers and students of Kalika Public School, and local residents. The initiative aimed to connect the environment with people’s lives and livelihoods and to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge on the impacts of waste through cleanliness and awareness activities.

INSEC Province Coordinator Manohar Kumar Pokharel stated that keeping the Earth clean ensures a secure future for everyone. He emphasized the need to educate communities about how carelessly discarded waste mixes with air, water, and food, eventually entering the human body and affecting health. He further noted that the program was organized to raise awareness that human life becomes polluted when the environment is polluted, and to instill this understanding within the community.

Chairperson of Devanagunj Rural Municipality, Bechan Prasad Mehta, stated that while there is some theoretical knowledge on forest and environmental conservation, climate change, and sanitation, there is a much weaker level of practical application.During the program, Bazar Committee Chair Ramchandra Mehta, School Principal Umesh Kumar Mehta, and Human Rights Defenders Network member Dipendra Jha, among others, expressed concern that increasing greenhouse gas emissions due to climate change are raising the Earth’s average temperature. They noted that this is triggering natural disasters, causing serious impacts on public health and the spread of life-threatening diseases, leading to the extinction of rare wildlife and plant species, and increasing risks of food and water shortages, ultimately contributing to a decline in agricultural production and a growing food security crisis.

It was also recalled that, with the objective of raising political and social awareness on environmental protection globally, the United Nations General Assembly organized the World Environment Conference from June 5 to 16, 1972. A year after this conference, World Environment Day began to be observed from June 5, 1973, to encourage awareness for environmental protection.

In Nepal, Article 30 of the Constitution of 2015  guarantees every citizen the fundamental right to live in a clean and healthy environment.
