The Tanjakot Rural Municipality in Humla is extremely high-risk in terms of landslides and earthquakes. Locals report that since the settlements throughout the rural municipality are built on loose and marshy soil, even a small amount of rainfall can trigger landslides, and the ground shakes with even minor tremors.
The chairperson of the rural municipality, Lalkesh Jaisi, stated that settlements in all five wards of the rural municipality are at risk. The land is steep and marshy. As soon as it rains, the soil cracks and landslides take place as per Chairperson Jaisi. During the Rural Municipality assembly, all settlements were declared as high-risk areas for landslides and earthquakes. Chairperson Jaisi informed that even the newly constructed, well-equipped building at the rural municipality center in Chaprela is at high risk of landslides. He added that the Uttisyani settlement in Ward No-4 is particularly at the greatest risk.
Tilak Shahi, a local of Ward No. 4, stated that in this rural municipality even minor tremors cause the ground to shake and subside. He noted that this increases the potential for significant human and material losses in the future. He added that during the rainy season, landslides wash away farmland, and fear and anxiety increase among households. A major disaster could strike at any time. Shahi urged the government to relocate settlements in high-risk areas to safer locations. He also mentioned tha two years ago, one person died in a landslide.
