Call for Applications for Chairperson and Members of the Transitional Justice Commission

The government has called for applications for the position of Chairperson and members of the Enforced Disappearances Enquiry, Truth, and Reconciliation Commission. The Secretariat of the Recommendation Committee published a notice on November 8, calling for applications for the Chairperson and Members of the Enforced Disappearances Enquiry, Truth, and Reconciliation Commission.

Interested individuals have been instructed to fill out the application form in the prescribed format as per the schedule and submit it to the Secretariat of the Recommendation Committee at the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Singhadurbar, Kathmandu, within seven days.

As per the selection process, interested individuals must be at least 35 years old, have obtained a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized educational institution, not be a member of any political party, possess high moral character, and have experience in the fields of human rights, peace, conflict management, or sociology. They must fill out the application form in the prescribed format and submit it to the Secretariat of the Recommendation Committee at the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Singhadurbar, Kathmandu, within seven days. After receiving the applications, the committee will prepare a list of eligible candidates, study it, and make recommendations.

Transitional Justice Monitoring Committee Coordinator Sushil Pyakurel says that individuals with expertise and capacity should be encouraged to apply to be included in the list during the selection process. He said that there should not be an environment where capable and experienced individuals are discouraged from applying. We must not trivialize the work that has been pending for 18 years and should exercise careful judgment when selecting candidates. The qualifications required include being at least 35 years old, having obtained a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized educational institution, not being a member of any political party, possessing high moral character, and having experience in the fields of human rights, peace, conflict management, or sociology.

Similarly, for the position of Chairperson, the individual must have served as a judge of the Supreme Court or Chief Judge of the High Court, worked in a senior position within the Nepal Judicial Service, or possess the qualifications to become a judge of the Supreme Court. The meeting of the Council of Ministers on 18 October reshuffled the Recommendation Committee, which was formed by the decision made on 12 April.

The Chairperson of the restructured Recommendation Committee is former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Om Prakash Mishra. The committee also includes former Attorney General Khamba Bahadur Khati, Arjun Kumar Karki, and Stella Tamang.
