Continuous rainfall has caused the water level of the Bagmati River to rise, inundating the Radhaswami Sukumbasi Holding Centre in Sundarighat, Ward 10 of Kirtipur Municipality, Kathmandu, on July 11. The flooding has once again affected displaced families who have been living there temporarily.
According to the affected residents, although security personnel used boats to remove some belongings after floodwaters entered the holding centre, most household items, clothing, and other daily necessities were soaked and damaged. They also complained that security personnel did not arrive at the site until around 2:00 a.m.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, information about the flooding was received at 1:38 a.m., after which a joint rescue team was deployed. The team comprised 30 personnel from the Riot Control Regiment, including a Disaster Management Team led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), along with an additional 30 personnel from Nepal Police.
The ministry stated that of the 154 people staying at the holding centre, 54 were safely rescued and relocated to Smriti Bhawan at Tribhuvan University. Another six people went to stay with relatives or at a nearby hostel, while the remaining 94 are staying in safe areas within the holding centre that were not affected by the floodwaters.
According to the police, preparations are underway to relocate those remaining to temporary accommodation in Kharipati, Bhaktapur.
