Bagmati Province Records 1,337 Gender-Based and Domestic Violence Cases

Among the 10 districts of Bagmati Province outside the Kathmandu Valley, a total of 1,337 cases of gender-based and domestic violence were registered by mid-June in the current fiscal year 2025/26. Of these, 377 were cases of gender-based violence, and 960 were cases of domestic violence.

According to statistics from the Bagmati Province Police Office, Hetauda, Makwanpur recorded 71 cases of gender-based violence. Including domestic violence, a total of 316 such incidents were registered in the district during the same period. Although Chitwan ranked first with 494 total cases and Makwanpur second with 316 based on the combined number of incidents, Makwanpur recorded the highest number of gender-based violence cases alone.

According to the data, Chitwan recorded 61 cases of gender-based violence, followed by Sindhuli with 51, Nuwakot with 42, Sindhupalchok with 39, Kavrepalanchok and Dhading with 38 each, Ramechhap with 18, Dolakha with 15, and Rasuwa with four cases. In terms of domestic violence, Chitwan ranked first with 333 cases, followed by Makwanpur with 245. Sindhuli recorded 103 cases, Nuwakot 92, Dhading 68, Sindhupalchok 58, Dolakha 22, Kavrepalanchok 17, Rasuwa 12, and Ramechhap 10 cases.

At the provincial level, however, cases of gender-based and domestic violence have shown a declining trend. A total of 1,881 cases were registered in fiscal year 2023/24 and 1,836 in fiscal year 2024/25, while 1,337 cases had been registered by mid-June in the current fiscal year.

According to provincial police statistics, rape accounts for the highest number of gender-based violence cases. There were 287 rape cases registered in fiscal year 2023/24, 253 in fiscal year 2024/25, and 190 by mid-June in the current fiscal year. The data show that a total of 730 rape cases were registered across the province’s 10 districts over the three fiscal years.

During the same period, police also registered 117 cases of polygamy, 148 cases of child sexual abuse, eight cases of child marriage, 96 cases of indecent behaviour, 52 homicide-related cases, and three abortion-related cases.

Chief of the Bagmati Province Police Office, Hetauda, Deputy Inspector General of Police Deepak Regmi, said that 1,337 cases of gender-based and domestic violence had been registered across the province’s 10 districts by mid-June in the current fiscal year. He stressed the need to further improve the accessibility of complaint registration, public awareness, and the effectiveness of legal action.
