Rising Number of Inmates with Mental and Chronic Illnesses in Palpa Jail

A significant number of inmates at Palpa Jail have been found to be suffering from mental illnesses and chronic diseases. According to the jail administration, six male inmates are currently taking regular medication for mental health conditions, while 63 male and seven female inmates are suffering from chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

At present, the jail houses a total of 236 inmates and detainees. The jail, which has a capacity of 325 people, has seen a growing number of inmates with various health problems, according to the administration. There are also 30 elderly male inmates in the jail.

According to Senior AHW Ganesh Gaire of the jail, inmates suffering from mental illnesses and chronic diseases are undergoing regular health check-ups. He said that arrangements are in place to refer patients to hospitals as needed. According to him, one male inmate is currently undergoing treatment after suffering kidney failure.

Jailer Bhagwan Bhakta Aryal informed that the health condition of inmates has been given priority, with health check-ups conducted twice a week. He stated that inmates requiring further treatment are being referred to Palpa Hospital, United Mission Hospital, and Lumbini Medical College for treatment.

The jail administration has been arranging necessary medicines for inmates who require regular medication. According to the administration, patients with serious conditions are also referred to hospitals in Kathmandu as needed.
