Dharmendra Kumar Karn of Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City–10, who had been on a hunger strike for three days, putting forward various demands including reforms in the education sector and reduction of economic costs, ended his fast on the evening of April 21 after the provincial government expressed commitment to take initiative in addressing his demands.

Madhesh Province Government’s Minister for Education and Culture, Rani Sharma Tiwari, ended Karn’s fast by offering him juice. On the occasion, Minister Tiwari expressed her commitment to prioritize and address the demands raised for reforms in the education sector.
“The problems of the people are the problems of the government. The issues you have raised for education reform are highly relevant,” Minister Tiwari said, “Although the provincial government has limited jurisdiction, it will immediately move forward with reform initiatives by making maximum use of its available authority. Coordination and efforts will also be made with the federal government on necessary matters.”
Karn had begun his hunger strike on the morning of April 19. He had staged the protest with demands including ensuring quality education at the secondary level, adopting cost-reducing teaching methods in the education sector, and removing obstacles seen in federal-level efforts to reduce costs in private education.
He has also raised demands that elected representatives should provide an initial response to citizens’ complaints and applications within 48 hours, and that the prohibition order related to the registration of land belonging to temples and monasteries, including Janaki Temple, should be revoked.
Before beginning the fast-unto-death, Karn had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Madhesh Province and, through the District Administration Office, Dhanusha, to the Prime Minister. He stated that he resorted to the hunger strike after his appeals were not heard or addressed.
