The National Human Rights Commission has stated that it has drawn serious attention to the uncertain situation emerging in Middle Eastern countries due to the Israel–U.S. attack on Iran, and to the potential impact on Nepali citizens residing in that region.
In a press release issued on March 1, the Commission expressed serious concern and worry over the hardships that Nepali nationals may face as a result of the war.
The Commission stated that, as the State is the guardian of its citizens, ensuring the safety, protection, and rescue of its citizens, wherever they may be in the world, falls within the responsibility of the State.
In this grave situation, the Commission has emphasized that the Government should immediately take initiatives to collect data on its citizens residing in war-affected and impacted countries, obtain necessary information regarding the latest ground situation, assess risks, and rescue and repatriate citizens who are at risk.
For this purpose, the press release mentions that the Government must effectively mobilize its diplomatic missions and coordinate and collaborate with Non-Resident Nepali Associations/organizations in the respective countries.
Therefore, the Commission has urged the Government of Nepal and its diplomatic missions abroad to collect data and assess risks to ensure the safety and protection of Nepali citizens in war-affected and impacted areas, and to rescue and repatriate those in highly affected regions.
Furthermore, the press release, issued by the Commission’s Spokesperson and Joint Secretary Dr. Tikaram Pokharel, also requests Non-Resident Nepali Associations/organizations in those countries to extend necessary coordination and support in ensuring the safety and rescue of Nepali citizens.
