Over 60 Parties Submit Proportional Representation List

Various political parties have already submitted their closed lists for the proportional representation system to the Election Commission for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026.

According to the Election Commission, out of 64 political parties that submitted closed lists, 54 parties will contest the election using their own election symbols, while 10 political parties have submitted closed lists to participate in the election using four common election symbols.

As per the Constitution of Nepal, there is a provision to elect 165 members through the first-past-the-post electoral system and 110 members through the proportional representation system. Similarly, the Election Commission has made public the list of documents required to be submitted by candidates for the National Assembly member election scheduled for January 25, 2026.

According to the Commission, candidates must submit a copy of their Nepali citizenship certificate and proof of inclusion in the final voter list of any rural municipality or municipality in accordance with the Voter List Act, 2017. In addition, a receipt or voucher showing the deposit of a security amount of Rs. 10,000 must be submitted. Women, Dalit, minority, or economically disadvantaged candidates will receive a 50 percent exemption on the security deposit. In the case of economically disadvantaged candidates, a recommendation letter from the local level must be submitted.

Candidates must also submit their voter number, details of assets, house number, house location, land details, and a self-declaration stating that they are not disqualified under federal law. A self-declaration stating that the candidate is not holding any office of profit, proof of resignation if holding any responsibility or elected position, a declaration of no disqualification, and a nomination paper signed by the candidate themselves or their representative, proposer, or supporter must also be submitted.

Likewise, if the candidate was included in the closed list for the proportional representation system in the Provincial Assembly election of 2022, documents confirming withdrawal from that list must also be submitted. The Commission stated that documents confirming that the proposer and supporter are listed in the voter list of the electoral college, including Provincial Assembly members or chairpersons or vice-chairpersons of rural municipalities, and mayors or deputy mayors of municipalities within the concerned province, must also be submitted.

As part of election preparations, the Commission has already appointed Election Officers in all seven provinces and has also opened Election Offices. Political parties have likewise begun preliminary preparations for candidate selection.
