Police have arrested Bina Rai (Limbu), 50 of Sundarharaicha Municipality–6, who had been absconding for the past 15 years for her involvement in human trafficking.
Inspector Ganesh Dahal of the Gachhiya Police Post said that Bina, who had been absconding for 15 years in a human trafficking case, was arrested a week ago by a police team deployed from the Gachhiya Police Post.
A complaint had been filed against Bina at the Area Police Office, Belbari on September 21, 2010, in connection with a human trafficking incident.
As the accused had been absconding for a long time, the complaint could not proceed for implementation and remained pending for years.
According to preliminary police investigation, Bina had lured a Nepali woman with the promise of attractive earnings and foreign employment, and trafficked her to Saudi Arabia using the New Delhi route.
According to police, the woman was taken to Saudi Arabia via New Delhi on the pretext of foreign employment and attractive income opportunities. She later returned to Nepal with the help of the Nepali Embassy and filed a complaint with the police. Upon learning about the complaint filed against her, Bina fled.
Although the rescued woman, who was repatriated to Nepal by the Embassy, had sought legal action, the complaint remained pending for a long time because the accused had not been arrested. Police have now filed a human trafficking case against Bina at the District Court on Mangsir 5 under the title of human trafficking, initiating legal action.
SP Kavita Katuwal of the District Police Office stated that the woman sent to Saudi Arabia by Bina for employment had to endure severe labor exploitation and abuse after reaching Saudi. “During the investigation following the complaint filed by the victim after returning to Nepal with the Embassy’s support, it was found that she had suffered greatly,” SP Katuwal said.
Although a complaint had been lodged with the police against the accused, the case could not move forward because the defendant was absconding. “Now that she has been arrested, the process will proceed based on the evidence,” SP Katuwal said.
According to the Human Trafficking and Transportation (Control) Act, 2007, taking someone abroad for labor exploitation or confinement is considered a serious crime.
If convicted of human trafficking, the punishment includes 10 to 15 years of imprisonment, financial penalties, and strict action from the state.
