Over 190 Inmates from Kaski Jail Still at Large

During the Gen-Z movement, 198 inmates who escaped from Kaski Jail on September 9 are still at large. Of the 773 detainees who fled from the jail during the protests, some returned voluntarily while others were arrested by police. According to Jail Administrator Rajendra Sharma, among those who have not returned, 187 are men and 11 are women.

He stated that 13 of the escapees are foreign nationals, 11 Indians and two Chinese. Among those who escaped from Kaski, 19 were arrested in other districts. Similarly, seven inmates who had escaped from other districts were arrested in Kaski.

Administrator Sharma informed that police are continuing the search for the absconding inmates. “After protesters vandalized the jail, some inmates who had escaped returned on their own. Some were arrested by police in different districts. Police are still searching for those who remain at large,” he said.

A majority of the escaped inmates had been convicted in drug-related cases or were serving long-term sentences. Of the two inmates sentenced to life imprisonment, one was arrested in Myagdi, while the other is still missing.

After the escape incident, the jail issued a notice on September 28, giving inmates until October 6 to return. However, those who did not return or make contact within the deadline are now being searched by police.

The jail administration stated that those who remain at large will face action under existing laws, and anyone found hiding, sheltering, or assisting the escaped inmates will also be prosecuted.
