Police have arrested two inmates who had escaped during the Gen-Z protest on September 9. According to police Abhishek Jaiswal, 29, also known as Chhotu, of Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City-2, who had fled from the Jhumka Jail in Sunsari, and Upendra Mandal,39, of Dhanpalthan Rural Municipality-3, Sorabhag, who had escaped from the Sindhuli Jail, were arrested in Morang.
Mandal, who had been convicted in a rape case, had escaped from the Sindhuli Jail on September 9 during the Gen-Z protest. The Morang District Court had sentenced him to eight years and six months in jail for rape. Having already served seven years of his sentence, Mandal fled the jail along with other inmates on September 9.
Mandal had been transferred from the Morang District Prison to the Sindhuli Jail. Meanwhile, police arrested Abhishek Jaiswal,29, also known as Chhotu, of Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City-2, who had escaped from the Jhumka, Jail Ramdhuni Municipality-5, Sunsari, while he was attempting to steal a scooter.
According to DSP Kopila Chudal of the District Police Office, Abhishek Jaiswal,29, also known as Chhotu, was arrested on October 16 from Dairaiya, Biratnagar Metropolitan City-16, after stealing a scooter (registration number Ko 38 Pa 4972) from Netachowk, Biratnagar Metropolitan City-1.
A team led by Inspector Kabin Rai from the Rani Area Police Office stopped Jaiswal for inspection after becoming suspicious during a security check. The scooter had no registration documents, and during interrogation, it was revealed that Jaiswal had escaped from the Jhumka Jail.
Jaiswal had previously been arrested in connection with a motorcycle theft case. The Sunsari District Court had convicted him and, on October 16, sentenced him to five months in jail and fined him Rs 10,000.
After serving part of his sentence, he escaped from Jhumka Jail along with other inmates on the night of September 9.
Police said Jaiswal was arrested near the Nepal-India border while attempting to smuggle another stolen scooter from Biratnagar into India. Morang Police are preparing to file a theft case against him, after which he will be sent back to Jhumka Jail to serve the remainder of his sentence.
