116 Escaped Kanchanpur Jail Inmates Remain Out of Contact

A deadline has been set for the return of inmates who escaped from Kanchanpur jail during the Janajati protest. The task force for the search and capture of the escaped inmates held a meeting on Sunday and gave the male and female escapees a deadline until 5 PM today to return to the jail. Prior to this, the District Administration Office of Kanchanpur and the jail authorities had issued notices urging the escaped inmates to come forward.

“Some inmates have contacted us after the notice was issued,” said Ramdatt Joshi, Acting Jail Administrator of Kanchanpur Jail, “but several inmates are still out of contact.” According to him, those who do not return within the specified deadline will face action under the Prison Act 2079 and other applicable laws.

He also stated that anyone found hiding or sheltering the escaped inmates will be held accountable and prosecuted under existing laws. To facilitate the return of the escaped inmates, the jail office has also requested the cooperation of the inmates’ families, communities, civil society organizations, and concerned stakeholders.

According to Acting Administrator Joshi, 478 inmates escaped on September 9, out of which 116 are still at large. Some escapees have returned on their own, while the police are actively engaged in arresting and returning others to the jail.
