Court Orders to Present Ruby Khan within 24 Hours

The Supreme Court has ordered the police to produce Ruby Khan in the court within 24 hours. Ruby was arrested from Maitighar Mandala during a relay hunger strike on October 8, 2021.

After her arrest, a hearing on the habeas corpus petition was filed by advocate Mohna Ansari, a former human rights commissioner, stating that Khan’s whereabouts have been unknown since her arrest.

A single bench of Justice Deepak Kumar Karki issued a show-cause order to Metropolitan Police Circle Lainchaur, following Supreme Court’s order to present Ruby Khan to the court within 24 hours.

Ruby Khan, a human rights activist, walked with 13 others (11 women) to the nation’s capital for 20 days from Nepalganj to Kathmandu to highlight the demand for a fair investigation into the death and disappearance of two women in Banke district.

Khan had come to the capital for the justice of two victims, Nakunni Dhobi and Nirmala Kurmi. Ruby including 13 other activists have been demanding legal actions against the perpetrators behind the murder of Dhobi and the disappearance of Kurmi. They have been in an indefinite relay hunger strike since October 8.

Khan was kept in the custody of Metropolitan Police Circle Lainchaur after arrest.

Police had sent her to Nepalgunj on October 9 saying that there was a case of polygamy in the district court of Banke in Khan’s name.

A team of human rights activists protested in Maitighar Mandala demanding that Ruby’s condition be made public.
