Continuous rainfall has caused flooding problems in several areas of Birgunj Metropolitan City. Due to the heavy rain that began on Saturday, most wards of the metropolis are facing a high risk of inundation. Birgunj Metropolitan City Mayor Rajeshman Singh stated that continuous rainfall has led to waterlogging in various parts of the city. He said that because of the persistent heavy rain, drainage problems have arisen. However, no loss of life or property has been reported so far due to the flooding. In some parts of all 32 wards of the metropolis, waterlogging has occurred because of inadequate drainage.
Mayor Rajeshman Singh reported that authorities have increased vigilance in settlements along the Sirsiya River due to the rising water flow. He stated that officials are relocating communities near the river to mitigate potential risks. Additionally, no human casualties have been reported in the metropolis so far. He also confirmed that residents in the flood-affected areas of Wards 11 and 17 are being transferred to safer locations. In anticipation of possible flooding from the rainfall, authorities have opened schools and community halls in various neighborhoods to accommodate affected residents, and these facilities are currently being kept available. “Rescue operations are being carried out in coordination with all relevant parties,” he added. Mayor Singh also asserted that a recently constructed embankment along Bhedaha Khola has helped prevent significant damage so far. In the past, Bhedaha Khola had caused significant damage in Ward No. 31 and other areas. So far, the embankment along Bhedaha Khola has held, but the question remains how long it will continue to withstand the pressure. The local administration in Parsa has begun implementing necessary precautionary measures following heavy rainfall. The District Administration Office of Parsa stated that it has initiated required vigilance and safety measures in response to the recent excessive rainfall.
Toyanarayan Subedi, Chief District Officer of Parsa, informed that the administration has activated necessary precautionary measures across Parsa, including Birgunj, following the rainfall. He stated that all three security agencies have mobilized and remain on standby to conduct rescue operations in anticipation of potential flooding. According to Subedi, no human casualties have occurred due to the recent rains. Subedi urged the public to report any flooding or related problems immediately to the local administration and security forces. He warned that rainfall is ongoing across Parsa, including Birgunj, and emphasized that risks could arise at any moment. Subedi advised residents to take necessary precautions and go outside only when absolutely essential. Bhedaha Khola had previously caused damage in Wards 30 and 31.
Jitendra Prasad Yadav, Ward Chairperson of Birgunj Metropolitan City-31, reported that the current flooding has not caused significant damage in the ward. He explained that the floodwaters slightly damaged the embankment reinforced with sandbags. Yadav added that authorities have been alerting residents and urging them to take necessary precautions as the rainfall continues. He confirmed that, so far, no human casualties or land erosion have occurred in Ward No. 31. The embankments at Chhath Ghat to the north of Belwa Gaun and near the western bridge of Belwa have sustained partial damage.
Sanju Chhatkuli, Ward Chairperson of Birgunj Metropolitan City-17, reported that water from Tilabe Bridge is flowing toward Ward No. 17. The Alauko Koniya Tole in the ward faces a high risk of flooding. This settlement has approximately 100 households. Authorities are using a JCB excavator to divert the water. In case flooding occurs, arrangements have already been made to accommodate residents of Konia Tole in community halls. Chhatkuli added that two to four thatched houses behind the Integrated Check Post have already been affected. Officials are currently deployed in the flood-affected areas, coordinating closely with residents. He also warned that if water from Tilab+e Bridge reaches Alau, the risk of further flooding remains significant.
Ajaykumar Barai, Ward Chairperson of Birgunj Metropolitan City-11, reported that continuous rainfall has caused significant problems in Naya Basti, Shripur. The water subsided somewhat in the morning, providing some relief. He added that they have relocated more than 150 residents of the Dalit settlement behind Krishi Samagri Limited to community halls in Shripur due to the flooding.
Similarly, Bijay Prasad Kurmi, Ward Chairperson Birgunj Metropolitan City-24, stated that flooding began affecting Naya Basti around 4:00 a.m. today. He stated that the area from Sabai to Thakur Ram Campus falls within the ward, and, being along the banks of the Sirsiya River, it faces a high risk of flooding. Flooding has affected settlements near the Sirsiya River, including Bahmatol, Manmohan Nagar, Jyoti Colony, and Bajrangtol. They have rescued residents affected by the flooding in the ward and accommodated them in Kurmi Seva Sadan and Ramjanaki community halls.
Furthermore, Shambhu Mishra, Ward Chairperson of Birgunj Metropolitan City-26, reported that improper drainage has caused waterlogging in the area. Flooding is affecting residential areas of Birgunj Metropolitan City-11.He urged everyone to exercise restraint and cooperate with one another during this time of disaster.
